Your Guide to Puppy Food

As a proud puppy owner, you know how important it is to care for their needs. Among the most important responsibilities is feeding them a healthy and nourishing diet that supports their growth. Puppies’ respective needs change as they grow. For the first two weeks of their lives, they simply require milk to support their basic pet health needs. The liquid can come from their mother or a milk replacer approved by a veterinarian. 

While they still need milk at three weeks of age, they can also begin to enjoy solid food. Still, you should mix it with warm water before serving it for easier intake and digestion. You can wean them off of milk by eight weeks of age. By now, they are ready to drink water and eat dog food regularly.

What Are the General Rules of Feeding?

During the first few weeks, your pup should receive at least four daily feedings. By the three-month mark, you can comfortably switch to three a day. You can further adjust to two feedings per day after six months or, as your veterinarian advises. At this point, you should also switch from puppy-specific food to a product designed for adult dogs.

After the canine reaches one year of age, you can feed them a couple of half-portions of food daily. As for how much nutrition to provide, base it on their body type. You should also keep in mind that it’s okay for puppies to skip occasional meals, especially as they grow older.

Which Kind of Food Should You Provide?

It’s easiest to feed puppies wet food, as it has more water to keep your puppy satiated and hydrated. It also often contains a better balance of fats and proteins that support their growth. When shopping for dog food, remember it can be more challenging for some young puppies to chew kibble. Also, if you’re hoping to feed them a healthy and primarily clean diet, you may find it difficult to do that with dry products. These options typically consist of artificial colors and preservatives.
